    shoreline ampitheatre sucks
fucking a, shoreline is a piece of crap. We left during the 1st encore, but it took us 40 minutes to get to the fucking freeway, because a) there were no signs to direct me, b) there's only one way out from the parking included with tickets ($6/each ticket). And there are fuck tons of pedestrians. Also, they made me wait so the band could leave; which they should have their own damn exit, or just sit tight in their nice limo.

    Finally!
I have internet again... but it's just Comcast while I'm waiting for AT&T to get off their butt. Apparently, it takes 3 weeks to disconnect DSL when you move and keep your number. And of course, you can't order new service until the old service is gone.

On the other hand, if I didn't need/want a static IP, and to be able to run a mail server without worrying about TOS, comcast was easy to get set up, and seems to be fast for now (I haven't gone around downloading linux ISOs yet or anything though)

    Personal Finance Software....
    Hey you guys....

What do you use for personal finance software?

My basic Pie in the Sky dream:

*) I want to own the data, software must run on my machine. Yodlee, mint, wesabe are nice, but at the end of the day, I don't want to give my data to anyone.
*) html viewing of current accounts: Keri and I both want to look at the data, and it's best if it's in a browser.
*) some reasonable way for me to get data into the system (I can write the scraper, in fact I did the last time I tried to use software)

Additional features that would be nice

*) some sort of forecasting. My primary interest is in making sure I don't make an overdraft because I'm dumb. My debits from the checking account are either very small (cash withdrawls), or known in advance (rent, credit card payment, other checks), but I have ocassionally forgeten about a check, and lost money to fees* as a result.
*) categorization of transactions... I want to split out Eating at restaurants vs groceries vs pinball vs gas, etc. I'm pretty sure I'll have to provide the categorization, but saved filters would be nice. Many of my purchases are from the same merchants.
*) would be nice if the previous features were web based too.

I really don't want to write my own shitty software for this, but the last piece of software I tried, jGnash failed pretty badly.

possibly dumb idea... browser state sharing
    Hey...

Is there anything out there that offers a sort of shared web browser between two users (on different terminals)? I know you could do it with VNC or similar, but I'm more interested in something that would be more tightly integrated into the browser... so ideally, you're only sending dom events to be replayed on the other side.

I was thinking this might be an interesting way to show a browser on my tv (connected to a computer with no human input devices), because you know... using synergy would be too easy, and relaying dom events would work so well with flash. :D

    new pinball machine
On tuesday, someone posted to the y! employee sale list that they were giving away a non working pinball machine. David let me know, I asked Keri, and she said OK, so with Jason and David's help (actually, they did most of the work), I was able to pick it up today.

It's in pretty good shape, and it looks like it shouldn't be too hard to fix. It's failing on the final self-test (solenoid power), and the previous owner had been having issues with the left flipper blowing fuses off and on... so I've got some debugging, but the CPU board looks nice (does not appear to have acid damage from the factory battery), so it shouldn't be too bad to fix.

The machine is a Mata Hari, so it is continuing the series of sexy pinball machines, but sadly not the series of sexy robot pinball machines.

Wooo... 64-bit userland on my laptop
I 'upgraded' my debian install to 64-bit userland, by following this procedure which did not eat my firstborn!

(And actually it ended up working fairly well through most of the process.... at one point the 64-bit apt couldn't resolve hostnames through dns though, but it would work with /etc/hosts, so I put in my primary mirror, and was able to finish.... and now it works)

woot: hdtv tuner pci card (1 tuner)
Woot has a refurb Pinacle PCTV HD Tuner today.... It looks like this is not a good card for those of you who want things to work the first time, but it should work with MythTV, if you're willing to put in the time. And at $20 (+ $5 shipping), it might be worth it.

I have not decided if i'm going to get one....

Need a bunch of SD cards?
Today, Woot has a two pack of new Kingston 2gb micro sd cards with adapter to regular sd for $6.49 + $5 shipping (can order up to three two packs with one shipping charge).

I bought three two packs, because it seems like too good of a deal to pass up. If you're local and want one or two of these, let me know.

my isp is expanding past california (or trying)
We're looking for a few customers that might be willing to help us test
our expanded AT&T DSL coverage. At this time we are just able to offer
1.5mbps down provisioned over PPPoE but hope that we'll be able add 3
and 6 mbps services soon. In exchange for helping us test we'll comp a
    couple of months of service.

In order to be eligible you must live in one of the following states and
have POTS service from AT&T in an area where their DSL services are
    available.

Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas,
    Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

So, if you, or anyone you know, might be able to help us out, have them
    drop me an email.

    Thanks!

PPPoE is like meh, but hopefully they'll be able to change it to just plain ethernet at some point (this is pure speculation on my part)

    wow... metafilter is awesome

"The supermarket argument makes no sense because a tremendous amount of labor and material goes into growing crops. When fresh bananas start falling out of the sky, give me a call. Actually, don't bother. I won't be answering the phone, because I will be sitting outside in the middle of the street, eating all the free fucking bananas I can lay my hands on." -- phooky

    Success
My new rock band pedal works. It's this practice pedal, with a magnet stuck to the underneath of the pedal itself, and a magnetic reed sensor stuck to the top of the base of the pedal, wired to a 3.5mm male connector. I'm using a magnet and sensor from the home security department, because I couldn't find a plain sensor (and I didn't want to wait for shipping). I got one that had connectors for normally closed and normally open, and I used a 3.5mm stereo extension cord... so I connected the extra wire (ring) to the normally open terminal... to help with anchoring the cable. I also 'stress reliefed' the cable with some blue painters tape. :D

But I didn't have any problems with it all night, and it worked right off the bat. (I had set it up last night using a multimeter).

Note: home security sensors say 'normally closed' when the non-packaged sensor would say 'normally open.' It's just that for security, the door is normally closed, and so the magnet is normally near the sensor, but with the sensor by itself, a magnet is not normally near the sensor.

Pictures, etc, to come next week.

openssl (which openssh calls) issue in Debian
Hey, if you didn't see this security advisory, you should look at it. Basically the openssl package in Debian was broken since 2006-09-17, in that it had almost no randomness. Any public/private key pairs generated on a Debian system since then are suspect and can't be trusted.

    gah... hamlet... a semi quote

As it is quite time consuming to speak at length at such a simple topic, I will be brief. Because, If I am brief, we will be able to eat tea and crumpets, or whatever it is we eat in Denmark. And, so briefly, I shall speak: Your son is quite mad. In fact, he is crazy. He is effected with this craziness. Or maybe he is defected with this craziness. Oh, ho ho. Anyhow, I am being brief, so I will leave you with this: your son is mad.

WTF? that wasn't brief. (well at least not by sane standards, i guess it was somewhat brief for mr. shakespeare)

    wtf...
    just ran into this... wow.

I guess it's good that this is still in Apache 2... in case someone comes to my site in a browser that was released before June 1997.

    X-Pad: avoid browser bug
